## Why the exam asks this

In the seven Group 4 papers we have mapped, these six letter items (ல ள ழ; ண ன; ர ற; kindred letters; demonstratives; interrogatives) were asked 15 times, 9 of them in the 2025 paper alone. Three shapes recur: pick or match the meaning of words that differ in one letter; pick the sentence with no spelling error; assertion and reason on demonstrative, interrogative and kindred letters. Learn the rule and one sentence per pair and these are easy marks.

## The eight confusable letters

ந, ண, ன, ற, ர, ல, ள, ழ sound alike; the book calls words that turn on them mayangoli words. Of the eight, only ந begins a word (நண்டு, நாடகம்); ற் never ends one; the others come in the middle and at the end. Saying மலை for மழை or தமில் for தமிழ் is where the written error starts. Example: say வாழைப்பழம் correctly at the market and ழ comes right in writing too.

## Short and long vowels

அ, இ, உ, எ, ஒ are short (one mathirai); ஆ, ஈ, ஊ, ஏ, ஐ, ஓ, ஔ are long (two). Lengthen a short vowel and the word changes: சிலை – சீலை, தொடு – தோடு, மடு – மாடு, மலை – மாலை, வளி – வாளி, விடு – வீடு; the book's sentence is 'சிலையைத் திரைச்சீலையால் மறைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்'. கலையரசன் written as காலையரசன், or மலைக்காற்று as மாலைக்காற்று, changes the meaning. With the kombu letters கெ, கே, கொ, கோ, check short or long as you write.

## La, lla and zha

ல, ள, ழ never begin a word; they come in the middle (கால்கள், கொள்வது, புகழ்வது) and at the end (கால், கொள், புகழ்). ல் is made by the thickened edges of the tongue nearing the root of the upper teeth, ள் by them stroking the palate, ழ் by the tongue tip brushing the palate. No ழ் after a single short letter, and no ழ row after ழ். Only ய், ர், ழ் stand as two consonants in a row (வாழ்க்கை). In sandhi ல becomes ற before a hard consonant (கற்சிலை, கடற்கரை) and ன before a soft one (பன்முகம்); ள becomes ட before a hard consonant (மக்கட்பேறு) and ண before a soft one (நாண்மீன்); also சொற்றுணை, பன்னூல், அஃறிணை.

**La, lla, zha: words that change meaning**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| களம், கலம் | battlefield and vessel, in one sentence of the book |
| வலம், வளம் | right side and plenty, in one sentence of the book |
| உலை, உளை, உழை | pot on the fire, distress, toil; உழை also means a kind of deer |
| அலை, அழை | wave; to invite |
| கழை, குழை | கழை: sugarcane, bamboo; குழை: small branch |
| அளை, முழை | கல் அளை: rock cave; முழை: mountain cave |
| கழி, அள்ளல் | கழி: salt marsh; அள்ளல்: mire |
| For practice | வலி, வளி, வழி; கலை, களை, கழை; புல் – புள்; குளவி – குழவி; வாளை – வாழை; கிளி – கிலி; மழை – மலை; வெல்லம் – வெள்ளம் |

## Na and nna

ண and ன never begin a word; they come in the middle (கண்டு, கன்று) and at the end (கண், அவன்). ட், ண் are both made by the tongue tip on the tip of the palate; ற், ன் by the tongue tip pressing the palate hard. In a word ட never follows ன் and ற never follows ண்: கண்டு, not கன்டு; மன்றம், not மண்றம். The book asks whether someone has a good மணம் or a good மனம்: one letter, another meaning. Pairs to learn: ஆணை – ஆனை, கனை – கணை, கான் – காண், ஊண் – ஊன், தின்மை – திண்மை, திணை – தினை, அண்ணம் – அன்னம். In sandhi ள becomes ண (நாண்மீன்) and ல becomes ன (பன்முகம்) before a soft consonant.

## Ra and rra

ர் may end a word (பார்), ற் may not. ட and ற never begin a word (டமாரம், றப்பர் are not Tamil). No other consonant follows ற்: முயற்சி, not முயற்ச்சி; after ற் come only its own row and the க, ச, ப rows (காற்று, கற்க, கற்சிலை, கற்பவை). No ர் after a single short letter: write நிருவாகம், கருமம். No ர row after ர்; ர் and ழ் join only other consonants (தேர்தல், வாழ்பவன்). Pairs: அறம் – அரம், குறை – குரை, பொரி – பொறி, கரை – கறை, பரவை – பறவை. The book warns that மீன் பொரித்தான் for the Pandya king makes him a cook. கறி தின்றான் and கரி தின்றான் are both correctly spelt but mean different things; கரி also means elephant. பந்தல் – பந்தர் and சாம்பல் – சாம்பர் are poli forms: one letter changes, the meaning does not.

**Kindred letters: each hard consonant and its soft partner**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| க் – ங் | back of the tongue on the root of the palate; தக்கை, தங்கை |
| ச் – ஞ் | middle of the tongue on the middle of the palate; பச்சை, இஞ்சி |
| ட் – ண் | tongue tip on the tip of the palate; பட்டம், பண்டு |
| த் – ந் | tongue tip on the root of the upper teeth; பத்து, பந்து |
| ப் – ம் | upper and lower lips; தப்பு, பாம்பு |
| ற் – ன் | tongue tip pressing the palate hard; கற்று, கன்று |

## Kinship in sandhi and in vowels

Inside a single word only the same hard consonant or its kindred soft one comes before a hard consonant. Sandhi uses the same kinship: கருமை + கடல் = கருங்கடல், பசுமை + தமிழ் = பைந்தமிழ் (inam mikal); காலம் + கடந்தவன் = காலங்கடந்தவன், செம்மை + தமிழ் = செந்தமிழ், where ம் turns into the soft partner of the hard consonant that follows (Nannul 219). Vowels have kin too: in uyiralapedai the short partner follows the lengthened long vowel: ஓஒதல், உறாஅர், கெடுப்பதூஉம், நசைஇ. So the short partner of ஐ is இ.

## Demonstrative letters

அ, இ, உ are the demonstrative letters. ஙனம் (manner) never stands alone; it comes as அங்ஙனம், இங்ஙனம், உங்ஙனம். உங்ஙனம் is no longer used in Tamil Nadu but lives in literature, and Sri Lankan Tamils still say உங்கு, உங்ஙனம். Words built on them: அந்த, இந்த (demonstrative forms), அது, இது (demonstrative pronouns), அப்படி, இப்படி, அதற்கு, இதற்கு. அதற்கு = அது + அன் + கு; அதற்க்கு is wrong. Before a vowel அது becomes அஃது and இது becomes இஃது. Tamil demonstrative pronouns changed shape in the other Dravidian languages. Example: in இந்தப் பேருந்து மதுரைக்குப் போகுமா? the ப் doubles after இந்த.

## Interrogative letters

Among the interrogative letters, எ and யா join ஙனம் as எங்ஙனம், யாங்ஙனம், both rare today. From எ come எந்த (an interrogative form), எது, எவை (interrogative pronouns), எப்படி and எதற்கு. The subject of a sentence answers யார்? எது? எவை?; in கரிகாலன் யார்? the question word யார் is itself the predicate. Before a vowel எது becomes எஃது. Example: at a bus stand, எந்தப் பேருந்து? doubles ப்; எது போகும்? does not.

**Demonstratives and interrogatives: does the hard consonant double?**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| அ, இ (demonstrative), எ (interrogative) | doubles: அச்சட்டை, எத்திசை? |

**Example: கண்டேன் or கன்டேன்: checking one word**

which fills 'நேற்று காட்டில் ஒரு யானையைக் ___.': கண்டேன் or கன்டேன்?

1. Look at the next letter: it is ட (டே).
2. ட never follows ன், and ற never follows ண்.
3. So ண் must stand before ட.

Answer: கண்டேன். (In கன்று, மன்றம் ற follows ன்.)

**Key facts**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Of the confusable letters, begins a word | only ந (Standard 12, page 15) |
| Consonant that never ends a word | ற் (Standard 12, page 15) |
| Consonants that stand two in a row | ய், ர், ழ் (Standard 12, page 16) |
| Demonstrative letters | அ, இ, உ (Standard 11, page 17) |
| Interrogative letters that join ஙனம் | எ, யா (Standard 11, page 17) |
| Kindred pairs | க – ங, ச – ஞ, ட – ண, த – ந, ப – ம, ற – ன (Standard 8, page 18; Standard 12, page 16) |
| Short partner of a long vowel | ஆ – அ, ஊ – உ, ஓ – ஒ, ஐ – இ (Standard 10, page 16) |
| Short and long vowels | five short, seven long (Standard 6, page 19) |

> **Exam tip:** Memory hooks
ட – ண are one pair, ற – ன another: கண்டு, கன்று. A demonstrative or interrogative that grows into அந்த, அப்படி, அதற்கு doubles the next hard consonant; one that stops at அது, எது does not. The short partner of ஐ is இ: remember நசைஇ. For ழ the tongue tip brushes the palate: practise மழை, வாழை, தமிழ்.

**Easy to confuse**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| கண்டு / கன்டு | no ட after ன், no ற after ண்; கன்டு and மண்றம் are wrong |
| முயற்சி / முயற்ச்சி | no consonant after ற்; முயற்சி is right |
| இந்தக் / அது | doubling after அந்த, இந்த, எந்த; none after அது, இது, எது |
| ஐ – இ / ஐ – அ | the short partner of ஐ is இ (நசைஇ); ஐ – அ is not a kindred pair |
| கறி / கரி | both correctly spelt, different meanings (கரி also means elephant) |
| அதற்கு / அதற்க்கு | அது + அன் + கு = அதற்கு; அதற்க்கு is wrong |
| நிர்வாகம் / நிருவாகம் | no ர் after a single short letter; நிருவாகம் is right |
