## Why the exam asks this

The 2024 and 2025 papers asked candidates to order words into a sentence. Questions on the kind of sentence and on the particle phrase also came. Know the order and the kinds and the answer comes easily.

## The three parts of a sentence

The noun a sentence rises from is the subject. The place where the sentence's meaning settles is the predicate. The thing the subject chooses to act on is the object. In மீனா கனகாம்பரத்தைச் சூடினாள், மீனா is the subject, கனகாம்பரம் the object and சூடினாள் the predicate. A sentence need not have an object. In படித்தாய், the subject நீ is not stated; this is an understood subject.

**Three kinds of predicate**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Verb predicate | நான் வந்தேன் |
| Noun predicate | சொன்னவள் கலா |
| Question predicate | விளையாடுபவன் யார் |

## Word order

Except in a few places, Tamil does not insist on subject, object, predicate in that order. This is one of the strengths of Tamil sentence structure. One sentence can come in five orders: நான் பாடத்தைப் படித்தேன்; பாடத்தை நான் படித்தேன்; படித்தேன் நான் பாடத்தை; நான் படித்தேன் பாடத்தை; பாடத்தைப் படித்தேன் நான். So in an ordering question, the order that makes the meaning clear is the answer.

**Example: Ordering words**

order the words படித்தேன், பாடத்தை, நான்.

1. Find the subject: நான்.
2. Find the object: பாடத்தை.
3. Find the predicate: படித்தேன்.
4. Set them as subject, object, predicate.

Answer: நான் பாடத்தைப் படித்தேன்.

## Adjective and adverb

In நல்ல நூல், the word qualifying the noun is an adjective. In மெல்ல வந்தான், the word qualifying the verb is an adverb. The book has an exercise fitting the adjectives நல்ல, பெரிய, இனிய, கொடிய into sentences. It also has an exercise filling a suitable object in blanks such as தமிழ் ___ கொண்டுள்ளது and புத்தகங்கள் ___ கொடுக்கின்றன.

**Four kinds by meaning**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Statement | என் அண்ணன் நாளை வருவான் |
| Question | உள்ளே பேசிக்கொண்டிருப்பவர் யார்? |
| Wish | இளமையில் கல்; உழவுத்தொழில் வாழ்க; கல்லாமை ஒழிக |
| Exclamation | எவ்வளவு உயரமான மரம்! |

## Wish and exclamation

A wish sentence carries a command, a request, a blessing or a curse. An exclamation shows joy, weeping, sorrow, fear, wonder and the like. பூக்களைப் பறிக்காதீர் is a command sentence.

## Affirmative and negative

குமரன் மழையில் நனைந்தான் is an affirmative sentence. குமரன் மழையில் நனையவில்லை is a negative sentence. இது நாற்காலி and அவன் மாணவன் are noun-predicate sentences.

## What a தொகாநிலைத் தொடர் is

A தொகாநிலைத் தொடர் shows its meaning openly, with no word or case ending dropped between its words. A subject followed by a noun, verb or question predicate is a subject phrase. A vocative followed by a verb is a vocative phrase. When the finite verb that belongs at the end stands first and a noun closes the phrase, it is a finite-verb phrase.

**Nine kinds of தொகாநிலைத் தொடர்**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Subject phrase | காவிரி பாய்ந்தது; பேருந்து வருமா |
| Vocative phrase | நண்பா எழுது |
| Finite-verb phrase | பாடினாள் கண்ணகி |
| Adjectival participle phrase | கேட்ட பாடல் |
| Verbal participle phrase | பாடி மகிழ்ந்தனர் |
| Case phrase | கட்டுரையைப் படித்தாள் |
| Particle phrase | மற்றொன்று (மற்று + ஒன்று) |
| Uriccol phrase | சாலச் சிறந்தது |
| Repetition phrase | வருக வருக வருக |

**Key facts**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Sentences by meaning | four kinds (Standard 8, page 40) |
| தொகாநிலைத் தொடர் | nine kinds (Standard 10, page 63) |
| A fixed word order | not in Tamil (Standard 9, page 18) |
| Understood subject | படித்தாய் (Standard 9, page 18) |
| Request, blessing, curse | wish sentence (Standard 8, page 40) |

> **Exam tip:** Memory hooks
வாழ்க, ஒழிக or கல் means a wish. Wonder with எவ்வளவு means an exclamation. A finite verb first and a noun after it is a finite-verb phrase.

**Easy to confuse**

| | |
| --- | --- |
| Subject / object | in an active sentence the doer is the subject and the thing acted on the object |
| Wish / exclamation | கல்லாமை ஒழிக is a wish; எவ்வளவு உயரமான மரம் an exclamation |
| Adjective / adverb | நல்ல நூல் adjective; மெல்ல வந்தான் adverb |
| Particle / uriccol phrase | மற்றொன்று particle; சாலச் சிறந்தது uriccol |
| Word order | a changed order is not wrong; in an ordering question the clear order is the answer |
