# How to start TNPSC Group 4 preparation from zero: 7 steps for beginners

> Start with the official syllabus and exam pattern, not a pile of books. Read Samacheer school textbooks for Tamil and General Studies, practise aptitude daily and solve TNPSC's past papers weekly. Part A Tamil carries 150 of 300 marks (page 20), so give it the most time. The written exam under Notification 11/2026 is on 10.01.2027 (page 1).

Are you just starting to prepare for TNPSC Group 4? Do not worry. Everyone starts at step one. This guide gives you seven simple steps. The exam facts come from TNPSC Notification 11/2026 and the Group 4 syllabus (code 496), each with its page number. The study tips are only our advice, and we label them "our advice".

Not sure yet what TNPSC is, or which exam fits you? Read [new to TNPSC](/en/start) first.

One point to be clear on: the written exam under Notification 11/2026 is on 10.01.2027, from 9.30 AM to 12.30 PM ([Notification 11/2026, page 1, para 1.2](https://tnpsc.gov.in/document/english/group_english.pdf)). This 2027 exam belongs to the notification that is out now.

[Not applied yet?](/en/guides/group-4-how-to-apply) The last date to apply is 05.11.2026, 11.59 PM (the same page 1, para 1.2).

## Step 1: Understand the exam first

Before you buy any book, learn what the exam looks like. In three lines:

- One paper: 200 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours. Standard: SSLC.
- Part A, the Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test: 100 questions, 150 marks. Part B, General Studies: 75 questions. Part C, Aptitude and Mental Ability: 25 questions. Parts B and C carry 150 marks together.
- Parts B and C are evaluated only if you score at least 60 of 150 in Part A.

All of this is on page 20 of the notification (paras 6 and 6.1). For the detail, read [the exam pattern and the 60/150 rule](/en/guides/group-4-exam-pattern). For a short summary, see [the Group 4 exam page](/en/exams/group-4).

**Table 1: where to study each part** (questions: Notification 11/2026, page 20. The "where to study" column is our advice.)

| Part | Questions | Where to study (our advice) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A: Tamil | 100 | Samacheer Tamil textbooks; TNPSC's official past papers |
| B: General Studies | 75 | Samacheer science and social science textbooks; current affairs |
| C: Aptitude | 25 | The sum types listed in the syllabus; daily practice on paper |

## Step 2: Keep the syllabus with you

The syllabus has 15 units: 7 for Tamil, 6 for General Studies and 2 for Aptitude (syllabus code 496, dated 12.12.2024). In the official [syllabus PDF](https://tnpsc.gov.in/static_pdf/syllabus/496_Group%20IV%20Syllabus.pdf), the Tamil syllabus is on pages 5-8 and the English one on pages 1-4. A note on letters: the PDF calls General Studies "Part A", Aptitude "Part B" and Tamil "Part C" (pages 1-2). We follow the notification: Part A Tamil, Part B General Studies, Part C Aptitude (page 20). If in doubt, go by the part's name.

Our advice: print the pages, or save them on your phone. Each time you finish a unit, put a mark next to it. You will see at a glance what is done and what is left. We explain what each unit covers, in plain words, in [the syllabus, unit by unit](/en/guides/group-4-syllabus-explained).

The number of questions the syllabus gives for each unit is only indicative (notification, para 6.3, page 21). So do not drop a unit because it looks small.

## Step 3: Which books? Samacheer textbooks

Do not buy a pile of books at the start. The Tamil Nadu state-board Samacheer school textbooks are a good base. This is our advice. The exam is at SSLC standard (notification, page 20), and the syllabus itself says the Part A literature unit is based on school textbooks up to SSLC standard (Tamil page 7).

We have not yet made a list of which class and which lesson match which unit, so we give no class list here. Take a topic from the syllabus and look for it in the textbook's table of contents. For where to study each of the seven Part A units, see [how to study Part A Tamil](/en/guides/group-4-tamil-part-a-guide).

## Step 4: A small daily habit

Studying every day matters more than studying for long hours. This is our advice. Three small tasks a day are enough:

1. A small part of one Tamil unit.
2. A small part of one General Studies unit.
3. 15 minutes of aptitude sums, with paper and pen.

Our suggestion is 60-90 minutes on weekdays. If you miss a day, that is fine. Carry on the next day. Do not try to make up for it by studying twice as much.

In the first week, just get to know each unit. Read its topics in the syllabus, find the matching lesson in a textbook and read a few pages. You do not need to finish anything in the first week.

**Table 2: the first week, an example** (unit names: syllabus code 496, pages 1-3; the Tamil units are printed there in Tamil, and their English names here are our translation, not the General English units on page 3. The order of days is only our example.)

| Day | Tamil (Part A) | General Studies (Part B) | Aptitude (Part C) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Grammar | General Science | Aptitude |
| 2 | Vocabulary | Geography | Reasoning |
| 3 | Writing skills | History, Culture and Indian National Movement | Aptitude |
| 4 | Technical terms | Indian Polity | Reasoning |
| 5 | Reading comprehension | Indian Economy and Development Administration in Tamil Nadu | Aptitude |
| 6 | Translation | History, Culture, Heritage and Socio-Political Movements in Tamil Nadu | Reasoning |
| 7 | Literature and Tamil scholars | Revision of the week | Redo this week's mistakes |

## Step 5: Past papers

TNPSC's own question papers and answer keys are on its [Answer Keys page](https://www.tnpsc.gov.in/English/answerkeys.aspx). They are the most reliable way to see how questions are asked. Use the official papers before any other site's model papers.

Our advice: once a week, answer the questions from the units you studied that week, with a clock running. Then mark them with the final answer key. We explain where each year's paper is in [official papers, year by year](/en/guides/group-4-previous-year-papers-answer-keys).

Practise the OMR rule while you practise. If you do not know an answer, darken option E (Annexure IV, para 1.6.2.5, page 68). For each question left blank, 0.5 mark is deducted from your total (para 1.10.2.2, page 72).

## Step 6: Current affairs

Current affairs has no unit of its own in the syllabus. It sits inside the General Science, Geography, Indian Polity and Economy units (syllabus, English page 1).

Our advice: read one newspaper for 15 minutes a day, or one monthly compilation once a month. Note government welfare schemes and Tamil Nadu news in a small notebook. We do not recommend any channel or app we have not checked.

## Step 7: Keep a mistake notebook and revise it

Keep a mistake notebook. For every question you get wrong, write three things: the unit, the correct answer and a one-line reason.

Once a week, for example on Sunday evening, read the notebook again. If one unit has many mistakes, study it first the next week. Compare yourself only with your own previous week. This is our advice.

## Coaching or self-study?

Both can work. Which one suits you depends on your time, your budget and your habits. Either way you need two things: a clear plan and steady practice. This is our view.

- **Coaching centre:** you get fixed hours and direct guidance, but there is travel and a fee.
- **Self-study:** you study at the hours that suit you, but you have to keep yourself on track.

The Tamil Nadu Career Services portal ([tamilnaducareerservices.tn.gov.in](https://tamilnaducareerservices.tn.gov.in)), run by the Directorate of Employment and Training of the Government of Tamil Nadu, lists "TNPSC Group IV/VAO" among its exams and links to a list of the books held at the study circles of employment offices (seen on 21.10.2026). Open it yourself to see what it offers.

Whichever way you choose, nobody can guarantee a pass. Do not trust advertisements that promise success in a few days.

## Practical steps

1. Download the syllabus PDF and save its pages on your phone.
2. Read page 20 of the notification's English PDF once. In the Tamil PDF it is page 23.
3. Start a mistake notebook today.
4. Begin with Day 1 of Table 2.
5. At the weekend, answer a few questions from an official past paper, with a clock running.
6. Before the exam, check tnpsc.gov.in for any change to the notification.

You do not need any app to follow these steps. If you would like a daily lesson to follow, read about the TNPSC Guide app's [30-day programme](/en/programme); in its free 3-day period the plan's Day 1–3 lessons, the full question bank and one sectional test are open. After that, the free parts stay open.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I start from zero?**

Yes. Start with the syllabus and study a small part of one unit each day. The exam is at SSLC standard (Notification 11/2026, page 20). This is our advice; no schedule can guarantee a pass.

**Are Samacheer textbooks enough?**

They are the base, not the whole plan. Add practice on TNPSC's official past papers and a current affairs habit. This is our advice; no book can guarantee a pass.

**Do I need coaching?**

Not necessarily. Self-study works too. Choose the way you can keep up week after week. Either way, what matters is a plan and steady practice. This is our view.

**How long should I study each day?**

Our suggestion is 60-90 minutes on weekdays, with a little more time for aptitude sums at the weekend. For what to study week by week, see the 10-week study schedule linked under Read next on this page.

**Which part should I study first?**

Part A Tamil. Parts B and C are evaluated only if you score at least 60 of 150 in Part A (Notification 11/2026, para 6.1, page 20). So give Tamil the first slot every day.
